Affected surcharges include additional handling, residential delivery, and ground economy. Oversized peak surcharges remain the same.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fedex.com\/en-us\/shipping\/current-rates\/surcharges-and-fees.html#peak-surcharge\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FedEx released a statement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> noting that the impact of COVID-19 continues to \u201cgenerate elevated volumes, high demand for capacity, and increased operating costs.\u201d In order to keep up with these and provide customers with good service, they are increasing the following surcharges.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>UPS International Peak Surcharges<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Effective May 23, 2021, some of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ups.com\/us\/en\/shipping\/zones-and-rates\/peak-surcharges.page?WT.mc_id=VAN701692\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UPS international channels<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will experience increased rates. This includes shipments originating from Asia, including China Mainland, Hong Kong SAR, and Taiwan. See the full details on surcharges, dates and rates in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ups.com\/assets\/resources\/media\/en_US\/2021_UPS_Peak_Surcharges.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UPS rate sheet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>USPS Proposed Rate Increase<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a May 28 announcement, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/about.usps.com\/newsroom\/national-releases\/2021\/0528-usps-proceeds-with-request-for-postal-rate-change.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">USPS published a 2021 rate increase<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> citing an average overall raise of 6.9% for the organization\u2019s main services. The proposal is to have these rates increase beginning August 29, 2021 as part of a 10-year plan for the organization to achieve financial sustainability and service excellence. USPS still provides one of the world\u2019s most affordable shipping rates.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The statement reads, \u201cFirst-Class Mail prices would increase by 6.8% to offset declining revenue due to First-Class Mail volume declines. In the past 10 years, mail volume has declined by 46 billion pieces, or 28%, and is continuing to decline. Over the same period, First-Class Mail volume has dropped 32%, and single piece First-Class Mail volume \u2014 including letters bearing postage stamps \u2014 has declined 47%.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are the outlined proposed increases:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Ocean Freight Rates Continue to Rise<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last year\u2019s spike in ocean freight demand was thought to be a short-term reaction to shifting consumer demands due to the COVID pandemic. But as a 40-foot container from Shanghai to Los Angeles hit an all time high in April it appears these rates are here to stay for a while. In the last year the global supply chain has experienced disruptions such as container box shortages and port congestion that are also contributing factors. The cost of shipping a 40-foot container rose above $4,000 in April, up from $1,500 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usfunds.com\/investor-library\/frank-talk-a-ceo-blog-by-frank-holmes\/inflation-is-coming-for-your-wealth\/#.YKPBmpNKhhA\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a year ago<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The freight route with the biggest year-over-year increases is China\/East Asia to North Europe. Experts are predicting that any relief from these freight disruptions may not come until 2022.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Freight Delays Across the Industry<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All forms of shipping are showing tough market conditions caused by shortages in drivers and warehouse workers. Experts suggest urging consumers to ship early because of transit time delays across the industry.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are still delays on exports into Canada due to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/americas\/canadian-government-passes-legislation-end-montreal-port-strike-2021-05-01\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">labor strike of 1150 dockworkers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on April 26 in the Port of Montreal (Canada\u2019s second largest port).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reports of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theloadstar.com\/west-coast-port-congestion-could-last-until-summer-peak-season\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">port delays along the West Coast<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, may last through the summer and linger through the 2021 holidays. The congestion is said to be a result of 2020 backups caused by COVID shutdowns.
